Background
Bogodile Boo Maidi (BBM) is a Farming business venture based at Matsheng village
under Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in the North West Province.
BBM Agricultural farming business venture will be implemented in two phases, support
system that covers infrastructure and agricultural production inputs.
This will be a new
farming business venture with no equipment and infrastructure on hand. The
establishment of small white bean and sunflower enterprise was the community concept
for planting crops (legumes & oil seed) on a 100ha that was allocated.
Objectives
Soils classification was conducted with the use of soil profile pit to identify the different
underlying soil horizon. The team establish and plot on maps the boundaries among the
different types of soils. The diagnostic Top soil: Orthic A with textural class of sand clay loam however with the
structureless of clay percentage of 22%.The top soil depth was 30cm with dark colour and
grey (not bleached).
Based on the soil analysis and suitability assessment, it is recommended that the land be cultivated
with crops that are compatible with the identified soil forms, such as Valsrivier and Kimberly.
Specifically, crops like maize, sunflower, dry beans, soybeans, and vegetables are suitable for the
Bansvlei soil form, which has high potential but is limited by its effective depth of 600mm.
Live Stock
In addition to crop farming, the Ba Ga Maidi Agriculture Initiative also extends to livestock farmers within the community. BBM has engaged with
several community members who are raising cattle, goats and sheep as part of their livelihood. These farmers, like their counterparts in crop
production, face a critical challenge: limited access to reliable markets. As a result, many are unable to sell their livestock at fair value or generate
suûcient income to sustain and grow their operations.
